For Youths: Know Your Rights

What to do if you are stopped by police.

When you are stopped by the police you are required to give your name, age and address. You are not required to answer any questions or write anything down.

Use the following statement when you are stopped:

I want a lawyer now. I will give you my name, age, and address but I will not answer any other questions or write anything down without my lawyer with me. Call my lawyer if you want to ask me questions, search me or my belongings, or put me in a police line-up. I do not waive any of my constitutional rights.

You should not talk about your case with anyone but your lawyer. If you are arrested and held at the police station, do not discuss your case with the officers, a youth in the station, or your friends.
