John Adcock grew up in Henderson, North Carolina, a small town in the piedmont region of the state. He went to college near home and then became an AmeriCorps volunteer in the rust belt town of Lawrence, Massachusetts. After a year as a teacher, he realized he wanted to engage in more overtly political work that involved poor people. To achieve this, he headed to New Orleans to work in a small office that defended poor people facing the death penalty all over Louisiana and Mississippi. He worked there for five years and then decided to go to law school at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. At LSU, he and a few other classmates founded the Public Interest Law Society that continues to promote public interest related issues in all areas of the school including curriculum, scholarship, and activities. After working for a time at the Innocence Project after graduation, he moved to JRS where he is currently a staff attorney.
